August updates from Brecknock

Our Brecon Wildlife Trust Officer tells us what's been going on in her patch this August.

Grazing animals have an important role on reserves across the region. We were pleased to hear Sorrel, one of the ponies that grazes our reserves in Brecknock, won best mare, best foal and best in show in hand at the Welsh Exmoor Pony Show at the Lower Chapel Show.

Three people stood next to prize winning pony and foal.

This month has been busy finishing off the main Himalayan Balsam pulling and Bracken thwacking on reserves. As part of the Nature Networks Fund 4 project 'Path to 30x30' we have carried out 3 Himalayan Balsam clearing days assisted by volunteers in Pwll y Wrach. The NNF4 project has also allowed us to employ a contractor to contact landowners and map the extent of the Balsam using INNS Mapper. Following this, the contractor worked with Bannau Brycheiniog Warden, Nick Jones, and volunteers to pull a large patch of balsam at the top of the catchment. We have another year of funding which will really help with our capacity to tackle invasive plants and raise awareness of the issue in the area.
