May Brecknock Reserves update

May Brecknock Reserves update

Our Brecon Wildlife Trust Officer tells us what's been going on in her patch this month.

This month we finished installing an oak fence at the top of the big waterfall at Pwll y Wrach. Last winter the ash tree at the top of the falls fell down taking the fence with it leaving an exposed edge. The oak materials were funded by Nature Networks and should last longer than treated softwood but were very heavy to carry down.

Funded by Nature Networks 4, “Our Journey to 30 by 30” , we have been organising some surveying of the nature reserves to help us to report on the condition of the reserves. This includes habitat surveying and mapping of Darren Fawr and expert advise on the hydrology of Cae Pwll Bo. This is a particularly interesting time for the reserve. The conifers behind the reserve were blown down in storm Daragh and it will be interesting to see if the Globeflower population is affected.

At Coed Dyrysiog long lasting “woodcrete” bat boxes provided by Powys Local Nature Partnership were put up. These provide more roosting habitat for the bats. The existing bat boxes were put up around a clearing 25 plus years ago, and the clearing is now shady woodland. The new bat boxes have are positioned near the edges and river in sun and shade. They provide a variety of conditions for our many bat species, including Pipistrelles, Daubentons and Brown Long-eared Bats.
