The Badger (Control Area) (Wales) Order 2011

The Badger (Control Area) (Wales) Order 2011

On 09 March 2011, Elin Jones, Minister for Rural Affairs, laid the new legislation, the Badger Control Area Wales Order 2011.

You can read the written statement made by the Minister, or read the Ministerial submission and the evidence presented to the Minister which informed her decision. Some further information is provided in an explanatory memorandum to the order, prepared by the office of the Chief Veterinary Officer to be laid before the Assembly with the Order.

The Order is expected to come into effect on 31 March 2011. This will allow a cull of badgers in the Intensive Action Area (IAA) in north Pembrokeshire, and parts of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire (see map).

WTSWW continues to oppose the badger cull on a number of grounds and we will continue to support vaccination, thereby working to find a better solution to the bTB problem. We disagree that badger culling is justified, that vaccination does not provide a viable alternative and also that the benefits of culling outweigh the wider harm that culling causes.
