You may have seen our recent appeal to raise money for an artificial floating island on the Northern Wetlands lake at Parc Slip Nature Reserve. We had such a positive response to the project and many people showed their support for what we are aiming to achieve. Since the appeal for raft donations went out we have managed to raise enough funds to cover the full cost of the raft and its installation! We would like to deeply thank everyone who supported this project and donated to the cause. We also received a very generous donation in memory of Colin Miles from the Forest of Dean and Swansea, who loved birds and all wildlife. Without the help of the donation in Colin’s memory, and all of you who donated via the JustGiving page, we would not have been able to make this happen, so thank you!
Thanks to you we are very pleased to say that the Lapwing Raft is now being installed on the Northern Wetlands and will have a couple of weeks to 'bed in' before the Lapwings are expected to arrive at Parc Slip.

With the help of our Lapwing Champions, the contractors put together the individual floating units that made up the base of the raft. With spades and shovels we then topped the raft with a layer of cockleshells and floated the island out into the water. Over the next week it will be fixed onto the bottom of the lake with anchors and ready for the Lapwing.

We hope that when the Lapwings arrive at Parc Slip, they will make use of the raft as a safe place to lay their eggs and hatch the chicks.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Lapwing Raft, and a big thanks to our dedicated volunteers for helping to install it and maintain the habitat.
