Restoring White-tailed Eagles to Wales - a talk by Dr Sophie-lee Williams
Killay,
, Swansea, SA2 7DZ
Event details
About the event
Sophie-lee founded the Eagles Reintroduction Wales project during her PhD research at Cardiff University in 2016. She’s since seen her research transform to active conservation which aims to establish a small breeding population in south east Wales in the next decade.
A birds of prey enthusiast since she was young and now a raptor biologist, Sophie-lee says it would be a “huge reward” to see these eagles in our skies.
ERW is a Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust programme working with Gwent Wildlife Trust and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust to reintroduce the eagles to south-east Wales and the Severn estuary. Wales is the only country in the UK which hasn’t contributed to the conservation recovery programme for this species, which has been extinct in Wales by 1830.
The last known nest site was in Kenfig National Reserve in the wider Swansea Bay so there is every hope that, once reintroduced, the eagles will visit our bay to forage for fish in our shallow waters.
Sophie-lee will talk about this spectacular eagle - with its 8’ wingspan, the UK’s largest bird of prey - and the journey that she’s taken to this point where she’s hoping to get the go-ahead for a release programme from summer 2026.
Please note, doors open at 7.15pm for refreshments before the talk starts at 7.30pm. We request a donation from adults of at least £1 to help cover costs and we have a card machine. No dogs except guide dogs or assistance dogs, thank you.
