The project is called 'Our journey to 30x30 – condition, connectivity and resilience in protected sites' . It will focus on 33 of our legally protected nature reserves. Our team will be working hard, with volunteers and with contractors, to make our vision a reality. Our aim is to restore habitats to the best they can be, and to collect data to show the difference we have made.
In grasslands, we’ll be monitoring species, removing scrub, repairing stone walls, and tackling invasive non-native species like Japanese Knotweed. In woodlands, we’ll be surveying ancient trees and lichens, managing invasive Rhododendron, and replacing fences. Good fencing means that we’ll be able to control the grazing to benefit woodland wildlife.
We will also be doing some significant wetland and pond restoration, and hopefully even replacing a weir in Pembrokeshire!
We also have exciting plans to make our nature reserves even better for visitors. We will be installing new benches and interpretation at several sites, running some community sessions to encourage new audiences to visit for the first time, and providing guided walks and other activities that will help people to explore these amazing places. There’s so much planned that we can barely skim the surface of what we want to do in this article.
The project will run for three years, and will see over £900,000 invested in nature reserves across our whole area of operation.
In this project, as with all our projects, we are incredibly lucky to be supported by some amazing volunteers. So, please keep in touch via updates in future e-newsletters, and you will hear more about opportunities to get involved.
