28/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S

One harbour porpoise was seen at the start of the survey, 400m from the harbour wall travelling west. 3 bottlenose dolphins including one juvenile were seen foraging throughout the two hour survey, seen 400m from the harbour wall and also by the cardinal marker. One male Atlantic grey seal was seen 50m in front of the harbour wall and again towards the fish factory, close to the rocks.

Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S

3 bottlenose dolphins were seen with one juvenile, the same individuals as the previous survey. These were seen foraging, taking long dives by the cardinal buoy, throughout the two hour survey and then travelling fast towards the fish factory before disappearing from view.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction SE/S

There were no sightings until 12.30pm during this survey, when three bottlenose dolphins appeared 800m in front of the harbour wall taking long dives at this point for the duration of this survey. One female Atlantic grey seal was seen 50m in front of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction SE/S

The same Atlantic grey seal from the previous survey was spotted at the beginning of the survey, towards the fish factory. Then no more sightings were made.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 1/2, wind direction SE/S

Two groups of bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey, two were observed travelling towards the cardinal buoy then taking long dives while foraging around the buoy. Then another two dolphins were seen foraging 50m in front of the harbour wall, these were then seen again towards the fish factory and out of view. While the pair of bottlenose dolphins stayed foraging around the cardinal buoy. A female Atlantic grey seal was spotted swimming 30m in front of the harbour wall

Three bottlenose dolphins were observed throughout this two hour survey, regularly surfacing and seen tail slapping to dive and forage in the waters around the cardinal buoy.
