21/05/2016: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 1, wind direction SW
5 Bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted throughout the whole survey. At the start of the survey, four bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were sighted leaping and tail slapping just a few metres from the harbour. Foetal folds were still visible on the bottlenose dolphin calf. After 30 minutes, another bottlenose dolphin was observed and joined the group. A little over halfway through the survey, only two bottlenose dolphins and the calf could be observed taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. At around 10h15, one female Atlantic grey seal was spotted swimming just a few metres from the harbour wall. Diving gannets were also observed in the area.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 2, wind direction S
4 Bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

Throughout the survey period, the three bottlenose dolphins and the calf from the previous survey were observed between the headland and the cardinal marker, displaying a variety of behaviours including taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth, leaping and tail slapping. At the start of the survey, one female Atlantic grey seal was spotted again just off the harbour wall. It then quickly disappeared out of sight and was not seen again during the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull, sea state 1, wind direction SE to SW
5 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey, the three dolphins and calf were sighted between the headland and the cardinal marker taking long dives, thought to be foraging a depth. One bottlenose dolphin was also sighted near the headland. After 30 minutes, the dolphins disappeared out of sight. Halfway through the survey, the three bottlenose dolphins and the calf were sighted between the headland and cardinal marker displaying a range of behaviours. They stayed until the end of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/fair, sea state 2, wind direction SW
2 Bottlenose dolphins and 3 Atlantic grey seal

At the start of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were sighted close to the cardinal marker taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth. They quickly disappeared and were not spotted for the rest of the survey. Throughout most of the survey, Atlantic grey seals were spotted. At 15h30, one was sighted near the headland swimming towards the harbour wall. It stayed in the area for about 30 minutes and then disappeared. Around 16h00, another Atlantic grey seal was seen near the headland. It was observed swimming and possibly feeding in the area. Finally, at the end of the survey, one Atlantic grey seal was sighted just off the harbour wall.
