11/10/2012: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

14 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey there were several groups of bottlenose dolphins in New Quay bay. Two separate dolphins were seen leaping and splashing close to the cardinal buoy. Two separate dolphins were seen foraging close to the fish factory and one dolphin was seen travelling west towards the fish factory. Two bottlenose dolphins were seen leaping and splashing out in front of the harbour wall. Three bottlenose dolphins were then seen foraging close to the fish factory and two dolphins foraging in front of the harbour wall. Four bottlenose dolphins were then seen travelling from the area of the fish factory in an easterly direction whilst two bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging north of the harbour wall. Two bottlenose dolphins were then seen foraging at the cardinal buoy and one bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging east of the fish factory. One bottlenose dolphin was later seen milling about close to the surface near to the fish factory. Shortly after this two dolphins were seen leaping and splashing and one dolphin was milling around near the surface and four dolphins were seen foraging all close to the fish factory.

12 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling from the fish factory east towards the cardinal buoy. Four bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging by the cardinal buoy. Two bottlenose dolphins including a calf were seen travelling past the harbour wall in an easterly direction. Six bottlenose dolphins were also seen travelling rapidly east from the cardinal buoy. Two bottlenose dolphins including the calf were then seen foraging behind the harbour wall. Four bottlenose dolphins were then seen foraging north of the cardinal buoy.

20 bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging, leaping and splashing near to the fish factory whilst there were three bottlenose dolphins including a calf travelling west towards the factory. The three dolphins including the calf were then seen to be travelling west past the fish factory. Three bottlenose dolphins were then seen travelling south east towards the harbour wall. Two bottlenose dolphins were then seen foraging at the end of the harbour wall and four dolphins including two calves were leaping and splashing by the fish factory. Four bottlenose dolphins including a calf were seen foraging close to the fish factory, four dolphins including a calf were travelling north west towards the factory from the harbour wall and two dolphins including a calf were seen foraging north of the harbour wall. Towards the end of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins including a calf were travelling east past the fish factory whilst one dolphin was foraging near to the fish factory. At the end of the survey three dolphins and a calf were seen foraging east of the fish factory.

10 bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

At the start of the survey one female Atlantic grey seal was seen close to the harbour wall. In the second half of the survey ten bottlenose dolphins were travelling east past the fish factory and into the bay. Six bottlenose dolphins were then seen to be foraging north of the harbour wall and four dolphins were travelling west towards the fish factory. Two dolphins remained close to the harbour wall foraging whilst one other dolphin travelled west towards the fish factory from the harbour wall area. Two dolphins were then seen splashing and leaping next to the fish factory while two dolphins stayed foraging by the harbour wall.
