Remembering our friend Lyndon Lomax

Remembering our friend Lyndon Lomax

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Lyndon Lomax on 23 May 2025.  Lyndon was a great friend and endless source of information to many of us in the West Wales birding community and a longstanding supporter of The Wildlife Trusts.

Lyndon became the chair of the Pembrokeshire Bird Group in 2005, stepping down in 2013, although he remained on the committee for several more years, finally retiring in 2017. He also represented the Pembs Bird Group at the Local Groups Forum going back to 2009.

Lyndon was a passionate photographer. He had an eye for fleeting moments; dolphins breaking the surface, seabirds in flight, or the shifting beauty of the natural world.  He shared his images generously, helping to document not only the wildlife we studied, but the experience of being out on the water.  He supplied nearly all of the photos for the Pembrokeshire Bird Conference ID quiz, including the infamous mystery bird photo!

Lyndon was involved in birding on Dowrog Common and was also instrumental in providing funds from the bird group to erect the first osprey platform in Pembrokeshire at Teifi Marshes in 2012. He also organised and guided on the pelagic boat trips off the Pembrokeshire coast for many years.

Lisa Morgan, our Head of Marine Conservation remembers Lyndon fondly:

“I first met Lyndon over 30 years ago and he bravely volunteered to share the best Pembrokeshire birding spots with me. As an island warden with little mainland knowledge and no sense of direction he could see I needed some help! We spent several happy days out and about exploring the county together. We saw a few good birds, missed a few good birds and always enjoyed an extended coffee and cake stop along the way. I also joined Lyndon and his family on some memorable evening boat trips off Ramsey Island, watching shearwaters rafting and the sun setting over St Brides Bay”.

Sarah Perry, our Marine Conservation and Research Manager, also has fond memories of time spent out on the water with Lyndon.

“I met Lyndon Lomax not long after arriving in Wales in the early 2000’s, and got to know him through mutual friends and our shared passion for marine wildlife. Lyndon was a committed and enthusiastic supporter of CBMWC’s research, always first to sign up for a place on the all day surveys each year. Over the years, we spent many hours together on boat surveys, collecting data on marine wildlife in Cardigan Bay. Whether scanning the sea for dolphins, identifying seabirds, or quietly capturing moments through his camera lens, he gave his time and knowledge freely and with genuine passion. He brought warmth and laughter, often lifting spirits during quiet stretches with good company, whit and a cheeky smile”

Lyndon was someone who was willing to turn his hand to anything in support of conservation and his friends. He was in his element talking about or photographing our natural world and we feel very fortunate to have spent time with him, both professionally and personally. Lyndon will be greatly missed, but always fondly remembered.

Our thoughts are with Lyndon’s family at this time; his daughter Kath and his much-loved grandchildren.
