Welsh Wildlife Centre Volunteers and Staff
On Wednesday 22 June, some of the staff and volunteers of the Welsh Wildlife Centre and Teifi Marshes visited Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre in New Quay. The trip was arranged by the staff of the Welsh Wildlife Centre as an opportunity to thank the volunteers for their hard work and commitment and it was also a great social occasion for the group.
The day involved an exciting boat trip in the morning to try and spot dolphins in Cardigan Bay. The two hour trip allowed the group to witness hundreds of nesting seabirds on the cliffs, such as guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes and there were some fantastic sightings of gannets flying over.
A number of seals were spotted also but after an hour and a half on the water, not a single dolphin had been seen. All of sudden though, everybody’s patience paid off as a bottlenose dolphin emerged directly beside the boat. The group were amazed to see one in such close proximity!
Bottlenose Dolphin (c) Tommy Evans
On returning to land, the group were led on a guided walk by Natalie Brown of Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, and found out more about the survey work carried out by Living Seas volunteers on the harbour wall. This was coupled with yet more brilliant sightings of a dolphin family playing close to the shore.
Natalie then took the group along the shoreline, pointing out and identifying various sea creatures in the rock pools, including common prawns, shore crabs and an unusual strawberry anemone.
Everybody had a fascinating day out and many of the volunteers are already planning their next visit!
Volunteering at the Welsh Wildlife Centre and Teifi Marshes can be rewarding in many ways. It is a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends, engage with the local community and tourists, gain new skills and experiences and have a lot of fun at the same time! If you are interested in joining the team, please pop into the Centre or call 01239 621600.
