You might have heard that The Wildlife Trusts in Wales are working closely with local land owners and the Welsh Government to look into reintroducing Beavers back into Wales.

These incredible creatures have been extinct in Wales since Victorian times when they were hunted for a number of reasons, including their fur and natural oils.

After Scotland underwent a successful reintroduction project for the European Beaver, we in Wales would like to follow in their footsteps. We have had an enormous amount of support for this project and we have located six potential sites in Wales which could be used to reintroduce Beavers. Just one of these sites will be chosen to reintroduce ten Beaver pairs if we receive a licence from Natural Resources Wales to go ahead with the project.

Talented Artist and Scientist, Apithanny Bourne, has been working with The Wildlife Trusts in Wales to help raise money for the Welsh Beaver Project by kindly donating 40% of sales from a special beaver print she drew.

She told The Wildlife Trusts:

As a scientist and artist living near the Cairngorm National Park in Scotland, restoration of our natural environment is something very close to my heart. Reintroduction of the Eurasian beaver is not only important for ecosystem biodiversity, but a massive step forward in the rewilding movement. Both Scotland and England already have established beaver populations, which is why I decided I’d really like to support Wales in getting their own programme up and running.

Recently I produced a pencil drawing of a beaver and I’m very happy to be donating 40% of profits to the Welsh Beaver Project. Despite working in science, I’ve always believed that art can be a powerful tool for change and I’m always keen to show people that there are many ways in which they can help the environment. I wish the Welsh Beaver Project all the best of luck with their efforts and hope that many more people are inspired to support this important cause.

If you would like to purchase a copy of her artwork it would greatly help The Wildlife Trusts with their work for Beavers in Wales. The prints start at just £10.
