David Phillips was a member of the former Brecknock Wildlife Trust, along with his wife Jane. Jane asked that the donations from his funeral go towards something for the future. £650 has been received.
The Trust would like to thank the family and friends of David for their kind contributions.
Traditionally we pay respect to our departed loved ones through a gift of flowers. But cut flowers are short-lived. A donation to The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is a lasting gift that can bloom year after year; a way of helping future generations enjoy the wonders of wildlife around us.
Following the donation from David’s friends and family the trust ordered 25 quality larch bird boxes from a local supplier. Each box has a removable lid to aid monitoring.
The boxes were put up at Coed Dyrysiog and Drostre Wood, with a variety of hold sizes to encourage a range of tit species and importantly the Pied Fly Catcher. We also altered some existing boxes so that they could be inspected.
David has family in the Llanafan area and they had planned to move to the area. But sadly, David died after a short illness. He had lots of energy and loved the area, particularly around Crickhowell and enjoyed the walking festival there.
Andy King the Bird Recorder for the Vice County of Brecknock visited the boxes monthly over the summer to monitor nesting attempts and success. Almost all the boxes were occupied in the first year – mostly by Blue Tit’s! But Pied Flycatchers were found nesting in six boxes at Coed Drysiog. These smart little birds breed in our western oak woods but over winter in West Africa. All (leg) Ringing data and Nest Record cards will be sent to The British Trust for Ornithology in Thetford towards national statistics.
The Brecknock Wildlife Trust (now Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales) would like to thank the David’s family and friends for this legacy which, with the help of volunteers, should contribute towards conservation and our understanding wildlife for many years to come.
