Automated cetacean echolocation click logger

Introduction to the use of T-POD’s

PODs (automated click detectors) are used to study the presence of dolphins and porpoises, which produce echolocation clicks. PODs can collect data over long periods and in all kinds of weather. Therefore the PODs can gather information about the animals that human observers would not be able to obtain. The data collected by the POD can be used to identify habitats used by dolphins and porpoises as well as diurnal, tidal and seasonal changes in their presence.

The PODs can also be used to monitor echolocating animals around fishing nets. An MSc student from Bangor University (Jenny Lamb) used a POD to study the interactions between the dolphins and boat traffic during summer 2004. Here research study can be found in our project page here.
