Sightings Update 25/04/2019: Bottlenose Dolphins

Weather conditions: variable, sea state 1-3, wind direction S/SE

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted during two of yesterday’s four surveys. Dolphins, including one calf were sighted foraging and mingling across the bay during the morning. Later in the day, up to seven dolphins including a calf were spotted travelling and foraging around the headland.

Weather conditions: fair/overcast/sunny, sea state 1-3, wind direction E/SE

Our Living Seas Volunteers conducted surveys from 7am-7pm. A mother and calf were spotted foraging around the headland in the morning. Then after a quiet period in the afternoon, up to six dolphins were sighted travelling across the bay, staying at the surface and chasing prey.

Weather conditions: sea state 1-2, visibility >10km, light swell

Living Seas volunteers conducted one boat survey today aboard the Anna Lloyd. During the survey 6 dolphins were spotted foraging and travelling west.

Sightings Update 18/04/2019: Bottlenose Dolphins

Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction E/SE.

Living seas volunteers conducted surveys from 7am – 7pm. Bottlenose dolphins were sighted in all six surveys with an almost constant presence throughout the day. The dolphins were spotted doing a range of different behaviours from foraging to travelling across the bay. One lucky volunteer spotted the dolphins leaping and jumping out of the water.

Weather conditions: Variable, sea state 1-2, wind direction E.

Living Seas volunteers conducted surveys from 7am – 7pm. Bottlenose dolphins were sighted in all six surveys, with a constant presence during the morning surveys. The dolphins were seen foraging, travelling and tail slapping in locations ranging from near the harbour wall to around the cardinal buoy. One calf was spotted in the morning.

Sightings Update 16/04/2019: Bottlenose Dolphins

Weather conditions: Variable, sea state 0-2, Wind direction: Variable.

Our Living Seas volunteers conducted surveys from 9am – 5pm. Bottlenose dolphins were seen in all four surveys showing variable behaviour from foraging to mingling at the surface and also travelling through the bay towards the cardinal buoy.

 

 

Sightings Update 12/04/2019: Bottlenose Dolphins.

Weather conditions: Overcast/Sunny, sea state 1-2, Wind direction Variable.

 Living seas volunteers conducted surveys from 7am – 7pm and spotted Bottlenose dolphins in five out of six surveys. Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the day around the bay with one individual coming close to the harbour wall. One was identified as Juvenile. Behaviour varied from travelling from the headland to the cardinal buoy with some individuals tail slapping.

Sightings Update 10/04/2019: Bottlenose Dolphins

Weather conditions: Fair and sunny, sea state 1-4, wind direction E/NE

Living seas volunteers conducted surveys from 7am – 7pm and spotted Bottlenose dolphins in three out of six surveys. A maximum of two bottlenose dolphins were seen around the bay between the headland and the cardinal buoy. One was identified as Juvenile. Behaviour varied tail slapping and leaping to travelling across the bay.

Sightings Update 22/03/2019: Bottlenose Dolphin and Atlantic Grey Seal

Weather conditions: Overcast and dull, sea state 1, wind direction SW.

A group of our living seas volunteers conducted 2 surveys from 11 am – 3 pm. The first Bottlenose Dolphin of March was spotted early on in the first survey, travelling back and forth between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy. A lone Atlantic Grey Seal was spotted in the area throughout the second survey.

Sightings Update 15/11/2018: Bottlenose dolphin and Atlantic grey seal

Weather Conditions: Sunny, Wind Direction SE, Sea State 2-4

Our Living Seas volunteers conducted two land surveys, and briefly observed a bottlenose dolphin foraging near the Fish Factory. A female Atlantic grey seal was also seen swimming close to the harbour wall. Other sightings included a Mediterranean gull, and a raft of Common Scoter near the Cardinal Buoy.
