Manx Shearwater

Manx Shearwater

You may have been aware that The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales were lucky enough to host Robson Green and the crew from ITV’s Tales from the Coast last year on Skokholm Island. Well the second episode containing Skokholm Island launched on ITV on Tuesday 7th February and it showed Skokholm Island and its wildlife in all its glory.

Robson spent 24 hours last year on Skokholm with our two wardens; Richard and Giselle who are the only couple to be working and living on an island with no other full time residents. They do however share their home with some very noisy neighbours; the Manx Shearwaters. Robson joins Richard in his daily life to serenade the Manx Shearwaters in order to determine whether a burrow is occupied. Only the males will call back to a recorded Manxie call, although Robson does give his best Manxie call impression. Richard and Giselle survey 1,000 square meters of burrows every day to collect data on Manx Shearwaters.

There’s still time to watch Robson’s adventure on Skokholm Island.
