Fifteen excited people were gathered at Martins Haven jetty on Monday June 2nd. Their destination for the day was Skomer Island.
Normally shut to day visitors on Mondays, this year we have started running an exclusive guided walk event on a select few dates. For those who booked early, hearing the rumble of the engine of their boat as the Dale Princess started up must have been special.
Leading the walk was Dave Astins of West Coast Birdwatching. Dave has been visiting Skomer for many years and is now working closely with the Trust to deliver an exciting program of birding events. His knowledge, expertise and ability to locate difficult birds definitely helped the fifteen participants get the most from their visit.
Puffins always top the bill of any visit to Skomer in June, but with Dave’s guidance, the group also saw Peregrine, Chough, Short-eared & Little Owls, Raven, Harbour Porpoise, Grey Seal, all our thousands of Guillemots and Razorbills and chicks of many species – they even saw a Manx Shearwater roosting in the old bacon oven at the farm!!
We still have some spaces on our June 16th and July 7th walks. If you’d like a day on a deserted island book now on 01239 621600. There is also a Guided Birdwatching weekend in September, contact Andy on 07530 796150 and don’t forget our Manx shearwater week.
