April Brecknock Engagement Update
Our Brecon Wilder Engagement Officer tells us about the amazing events that happened in the region this month.

This month has been 'rubbish'!
We have had two volunteer litter pick events in April at Taf Fechan in Merthyr and Pwll Waun Cynon in Rhondda Cynon Taf. We were assisted by 6 fantastic volunteers and collected a whopping 20(!) full bags of litter across both sites. Sometimes litter picks can be tough. It’s awful to see how much damage our waste does to these amazing habitats. Having volunteers willing to give their time and energy to help keeps my optimism alive. We also see some amazing wildlife on these litter picks! This gorgeous little Smooth Newt was spotted by our volunteer Marni.

Hedgehog Crafts
Brecon Wildlife Watch made some fantastic hedgehog masks and clay hedgehogs at a craft event at Y Gaer, Brecon. Watch group leader Pauline also gave us lots of amazing hedgehog facts including the collective noun for a group of hedgehogs – a prickle!

Walking for Hedgehogs
On the 4th of April, Brecon Wildlife Watch group held a fundraising event for the Wildlife Trusts and completed a 3km walk (the same distance a hedgehog walks in a single night!). Da iawn, Wildlife Watchers!

Wildlife Events with People’s Postcode Lottery
This month we’ve also had some fantastic events with Brecon Mind and the Merthyr Biodiversity Partnership. Both events were aimed at increasing people’s confidence in nature. Highlights included orange-tip butterflies, a greater bee fly, a scarlet tiger moth caterpillar, and a very vocal willow warbler! A huge thank you to People’s Post Code Lottery for making these events possible.
