Urgent – Please Take Action Now to Protect the Gwent Levels
WTSWW are supporting our neighbours, Gwent Wildlife Trust, in their campaign against a damaging transport development in south east Wales, and your help would be greatly appreciated.
Earlier this year, we asked you write to your AMs in opposition to this scheme- thank you to the many of you who responded and let us know that you did.
Unfortunately the scheme has reared its head again, as the Welsh Government has now released the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the M4 options. These options include the possibility of a dual carriageway across the Gwent Levels SSSI and Gwent Wildlife Trust’s Living Landscape Scheme.
The Wildlife Trusts have identified a number of problems with the SEA that the Welsh Government have released, including:
- The SEA has been released AFTER the summer consultation, preventing it from being considered by respondents at that time
- It is based on weak assumptions of continuously increasing traffic flow, with which we do not agree
- It appears to have been rapidly put together and lacks adequate key data in areas such as air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution and their potential impacts
So what can I do?
Please write to Carl Sargeant AM, the Welsh Government Minister responsible, on email@example.com (the consultation inbox) AND Carl.Sargeant@wales.gov.uk and copy us in if you can on firstname.lastname@example.org
You can find more details about the consultation at http://www.m4cem.com/ and further tips on responding on the webpage for the Campaign Against the Levels Motorway (CALM) (in which Gwent Wildlife Trust is a partner) at http://www.savethelevels.org.uk/
If you also want to raise the issue with your local AM, you can find out who your local AMs are and their contact details by visiting the National Assembly for Wales website.
If you are able to get involved, please do so by 03 December 2012 which is when the consultation closes.
