A Nature Walk: From Limestone to Ironmaking

Join us for a linear walk in the Tawe Valley to see how the various layers of rock have influenced its industrial heritage and nature as part of GeoFest 2018 ForestFawr.

Craig y Rhiwarth Nature Reserve

We’ll visit Craig y Rhiwarth and Allt Rhongyr Nature Reserve on limestone and walk to Ystradfawr and Wern Plemys nature reserves where nature has reclaimed the old coal mines. We also take in Henrhyd Falls and glimpse the ironworks in Ystradgynlais.

 

 

Distance:  9 miles.  Some steep and rough sections.

  • Start: Craig-y-nos Country Park (CyNCP), upper Swansea Valley, SA9 1GL (OS Grid ref SN 840155)
  • Finish: Diamond Park, Heol Glyn Tawe, Ystradgynlais  SA9 1ET (OS Grid ref SN 786094)

Meet: 9:30am at Diamond Park (SA9 1ET, SN786094) for car share to start point at Craig y Nos Country Park. There will be a shuttle to collect cars at the end.

Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions and terrain. Walking boots and waterproofs essential.  Bring lunch and water.
