Skokholm Island Long-term Volunteering 2025

Each season we invite four volunteers to come to Skokholm and help the Wardens manage the island and monitor its wildlife. Applications are now open for 2025.

Sea lettuce

Sea lettuce is unmistakeable - most often a bright green and always translucent, it is found on all UK coasts.

Hedgerow

Hedgerows are one of our most easily encountered wildlife habitats, found lining roads, railways and footpaths, bordering fields and gardens and on the coast.

Meadows of seagrass spread across the seabed, their dense green leaves sheltering a wealth of wildlife including our two native species of seahorse.

With its fluffy-looking, light blue flower heads, sheep's-bit is a pretty plant of dry grassland, heaths and clifftops. Sometimes carpeting an area, it is popular with nectar-loving insects…

Weasel

Weasels may look adorable, but they make light work of eating voles, mice and birds! They are related to otters and stoats, which is obvious thanks to their long slender bodies and short legs.

Rocky habitat

Rocky habitats are some of the most natural and untouched places in the UK. Often high up in the hills and hard to reach, they are havens for some of our rarest wildlife.

Upland acid grassland and rush pasture

These grasslands, occupying much of the UK's heavily-grazed upland landscape, are of greater cultural than wildlife interest, but remain a habitat to some scarce and declining species.

These colourful little fish are a delight for snorkellers or shallow water divers to photograph, rarely being scared off by their presence!
