Cartersford - a new nature reserve revealed!
Event details
Ynglŷn â'r digwyddiad
This is a very special event for Trust members and supporters - the first chance to see the Trust's newest nature reserve.
You may have read that 21 acres of woodland were illegally felled by the previous owner at Cartersford before the Gower Society bought the land. In September last year, they leased it at a peppercorn rent to the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales to manage for the next 25 years.
Because the area is very much in recovery from the devastation, there is no public access apart from organised events and work parties of brilliant conservation volunteers who have been very busy clearing rubbish and debris, fixing fences and planting more than 1,300 trees!
The Trust's Reserves Manager for Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath/Port Talbot, Paul Thornton, who is overseeing the transformation, will tell us about the on-going plans for the reserve and the surprises encountered so far.
Teifion Davies, retired Head Gardener of Clyne Gardens and botanist Joan Derbyshire will talk about the wildlife and the flora springing up all around.
Paul is encouraging a mosaic of habitats to boost biodiversity. There is already marshy grassland which has wild caraway and devil’s bit scabious growing well but he’s also overseen pockets of tree planting and says there’s scope for the creation of new ponds. Water mint is already present indicating ponds were there in the past.
We request a donation of a minimum £2 per adult for this event. Under 18's are free but should be accompanied by an adult.
Car sharing is recommended as there is very limited space for parking.
There is no public toilet on site.
Please dress for the weather forecast on the day and wear boots or wellingtons as the ground may be muddy/marshy. There are no facilities so bring any refreshments that you need.
