Liam is a passionate champion for coal spoil habitats in South Wales and beyond. He and colleagues at Glo i Natur CIC are working to raise awareness of their amazing biodiversity and to safeguard them for future generations.

Among the fascinating wildlife on this former colliery site, we hope to see lizards, orchids, butterflies and bees - and who knows what else!

Liam treated us to an excellent talk in March about the work he and his colleagues have been doing exploring old coal spoil tips across South Wales and discovering whole new areas of ecological value. Their surveys have uncovered previously unrecorded species and even a Pyrenean semi-slug that was new to Britain, probably having arrived with imported iron ore from northern Spain.

Glo i Natur CIC - Coal to Nature - was founded last year to protect, restore and celebrate the wildlife and heritage of coal spoil habitats. The organisation is working towards a future where these sites are recognised as havens for wildlife and community wellbeing.

During Sunday’s walk Liam and his colleagues from Glo i Natur CIC, will be looking out for blooming Southern Marsh-orchids, Brown-banded Carder Bees and butterflies including Dingy Skippers.

We request a minimum donation of £2 per adult towards expenses. Families are welcome, although the event is likely to be most suitable for children aged 5 and over.

Unfortunately, there is no designated parking at the park. However, some informal parking is available along Hoel-Y-Mynydd (see options below).

 Additional parking may also be available in nearby residential areas, with Penyrheol Leisure Centre available as a back-up option.
