Last month you may have read about our partnership with The Gower Society and our newly acquired nature reserve, Cartersford. Over the last month we have been getting to understand the land, the work it requires and what opportunities it offers for wildlife.
We have been lucky enough to secure UK Government SPF Rural Anchor Funding through Swansea Council to help us deliver the 'First steps in creating a new nature reserve on Gower – Cartersford Project'.
We've already had a few volunteer sessions on site. The waste, scrap metal and other rubbish that littered the land have been cleared. The boundaries have been explored to identify where we need to make fencing repairs. Invasive Himalayan Balsam has been pulled where it is invading from the edge of Ilston Brook. While delivering the work our volunteers have been spotting moths, butterflies and lots of orchids. The work will be ongoing and there will be a huge variety of tasks volunteers can get involved with, a great way to get to explore the reserve.
If you want to get involved with this project please get in touch with Reserves Manager, Paul Thornton p.thornton@welshwildlife.org.
