We’ve had some chilly but beautifully sunny days in the last month, some not so sunny days too!
We did another day of hedgelaying at Caeau Llety Cybi, where we managed to join up most of our previously started sections to give a good section of laid hedge. It looked really good. Thanks to CCW for lending us the tools.
We’ve also done a few days of woodland thinning at Coed Maidie B Goddard and Pant Da, a nice break from brambles! We cut a coupe in Pant Da to encourage a more varied age structure within the wood. At Coed Maidie we continued with our all wood thin, removing lots of dead wood that was obstructing the growth of the healthy trees and then thinned some of the remaining trees.
We had a day cutting willow scrub at Cors Ian where the trees are slowly marching out into the bog. As the day progressed the ground became less and less frozen and we were paddling more and more! We finished the day with a substantial brash pile, and cold toes.
Loppers and secateurs in hand, we have cleared brambles (and the odd bit of gorse) from Rhos Fullbrook and Rhos Pil Bach. These have encroached from the edges where they are good habitat and feed the birds and mammals but are not so welcome in the meadows where they stop the ponies and cattle grazing and will eventually take over.
With all the rain we had early on the stream at Coed Penglanowen had diverted itself and was flooding the path, the causeway ditches couldn’t cope with it all and were heavily silted up and full of leaves. With the ditches cleared, a small section of causeway repaired and the stream hopefully staying back on its correct course (we did a bit of work to help it) the path should remain drier and passable. While we were there we also checked the paths, replaced a section of anti-slip wire that had mysteriously disappeared and cleared a branch from the river.
Thank you very much to everyone who has helped this month.
