March in Ceredigion…

March was a month of variety both in terms of weather and tasks, mostly grasslands rather than woodlands this month.

A day was spent clearing boardwalk at Cors y Sychnant (an ex Wildlife Trust reserve), a task we started last year and we have now finished. We also repaired the fence at nearby Rhos Fullbrook.

At Caeau Llety Cybi we were clearing blackthorn from a fence-line in preparation for a new fence to be put in in April. With time to spare we also cleared some blackthorn from out in the grassland where it is slowly expanding its range.

Two days at Cors Ian allowed us to clear some more willow and birch from the bog and extend the boardwalk for the pond view point, clear the green lane of brambles and clear away a fallen tree. The latter tasks being undertaken in snow and high winds!

At Rhos Glandenys we cleared more brambles from around the edge of the Rhos pasture where it is gradually taking over and at Rhos Glyn yr Helyg we cut down another gorse and bramble “island”.

Cwm Clettwr was our woodland day for the month where a fallen tree across the path needed clearing and while we were there a large patch of sycamore seedlings was cut back and we walked the paths clearing any stray brambles.

This month’s joint work party was clearing scrub at Teifi Marshes. A beautifully sunny day made even hotter by a large bonfire.

The next month will be more constructive than destructive with lots of fencing on the programme.

Thank you very much to everyone who has helped this month. If you would like to volunteer with us in Ceredigion there are work parties twice a week out on the reserves, year round, contact Em on 07980932332 or to find out more about Ceredigion reserves visit: https://welshwildlife.org/locations/ceredigion/
