Dormice and New Steps in Cwm Clettwr

Our winter work started in earnest this month: we cut down more sycamore saplings in Coed Penglanowen and attacked encroaching scrub at Caeau Llety Cybi, Rhos Marion and Rhos Glyn yr Helyg. We also spent a day thinning the birch in Pant Da woodland and another clearing old and dying gorse at Cors Ian.

Jenny Mac Pherson from the Vincent Wildlife Trust checked the dormice boxes at Cwm Clettwr again this month and found five more dormice, all male, and four wood mice. Four of the dormice were very active, the fifth quite sleepy and holding his tail. One of them was very chubby in readiness for the winter (34g).

We have also installed steps down to the new bridge at Cwm Clettwr and cleared more of the paths of overhanging vegetation.

At Coed Maidie we finished putting in the new waymarkers funded by Lottery Awards for All. Hopefully finding your way round the reserve will be much easier now. We have also cleared some scrub and started this year’s thinning works in the woodland on our joint work party.

Thank you very much to everyone who has helped this month. If you would like to volunteer with us in Ceredigion there are work parties twice a week out on the reserves, year round, contact Em on 07980932332 or e.foot@welshwildlife.org or to find out more about Ceredigion reserves visit: https://welshwildlife.org/locations/ceredigion/
