Blooming Brambles

With the amazing growth of the brambles this year we had to spend another day at Cwm Clettwr clearing back the vegetation from the paths. Hopefully they’ll stay clear for a while now.

After the fire at Cors Ian last year there is a lot of burnt, dead gorse on the hillside. We have been gradually clearing patches of this and this month we did another one. This allows the gorse to regrow and the grazing animals to get in amongst it and eat the grass below.

The Coed Penglanowen glade is cut every year in the late summer to prevent the brambles taking over, with so many volunteers we were also able to clear the overgrowing vegetation from the paths and remove some of the sycamore regrowth in the woodland. A very productive day in the glorious sunshine.

Another job that needs doing at this time of year is the cutting of Penderi Cliffs path. This again was very overgrown after the summer but what better place to spend a beautiful sunny day with dolphins and seals for company and chough and raven flying past with their distinct calls.

We started our marsh fritillary larval web surveys on our rhos pasture sites. This is an annual survey where we walk a transect through the grassland looking for the webs that hold the small black caterpillars of the marsh fritillary butterfly. They are usually found on the leaves of the devil’s bit scabious, their food plant. Unfortunately we didn’t find any at Rhos Marion

(there is a very healthy population of spiders though) but we had a very good day at Rhos Glyn yr Helyg where we found over 30, which when compared to last year’s 8 is amazing especially as we still have half the site to do. We also found one in an area where we didn’t last year but had seen an adult while we were there earlier in the year, almost exactly in the same place. More sites next week so fingers crossed.

Thank you very much to everyone who has helped this month. If you would like to volunteer with us in Ceredigion there are work parties on a Wednesday and Thursday out on the reserves, year round, contact Em on 07980932332 or e.foot@welshwildlife.org or to find out more about Ceredigion reserves visit: https://welshwildlife.org/locations/ceredigion/
