Land Based Sightings
June 26, 2018
Weather conditions: Sunny, Sea state 1, Wind Direction: No wind throughout the majority of the day. SW from 5pm
Yesterday it was non-stop sunshine throughout the day, with temperatures reaching up to 29oC, very little wind and a flat, calm seascape. Our Living Seas volunteers first spotted Bottlenose Dolphins at 7am, moving from the headland, towards New Quay harbour and some even stayed close to the harbour wall to swim around at the surface. At 11.00 am our volunteers saw a Bottlenose Dolphin calf, identified by its small size, light pale grey colour and wrinkled appearance. There was a period between 1pm and 5pm where no marine mammals were sighted, but at 5pm Bottlenose Dolphins were seen again. During the survey periods where there were sightings, the Bottlenose Dolphins were seen displaying a range of behaviours, including foraging, travelling, swimming/milling at the surface and even some leaping.
