4/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Weather conditions: fair, sea state 4/3, wind direction W

A lone dolphin was seen before 07.30 foraging by the cardinal marker. It was joined mid survey by a mother and juvenile which remained until just before the end of the watch.

Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 3, wind direction SW

The survey commenced with just the one dolphin present foraging by the cardinal marker. After 30 minutes a second dolphin was spotted close to the end of the harbour wall. Mid survey a mother and juvenile was seen north of the harbour wall travelling towards the harbour before numbers swelled briefly to five individuals present in the bay.

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 3/2, wind direction W/SW

The survey commenced with a pair of dolphins foraging off the end of the harbour wall where they remained for half an hour before moving out to the cardinal marker. They continued foraging there for the rest of the survey. During the second half of the survey an Atlantic grey seal was seen bottling north east of the harbour wall before making its way past Dolau Beach.

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2, wind direction W

Three dolphins including a juvenile were foraging midway to the cardinal marker at the beginning of the survey before they were seen to travel north out of our area. A lone dolphin was then spotted foraging by the cardinal buoy for 30 minutes. At the end of the survey a seal pup was seen swimming in front of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW

A group of four dolphins was observed early in the survey travelling into the bay from the direction of the cardinal buoy. By the end of the second 15 min period the animals had left and there were no further sightings.
