30/07/12: Bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey; Start time 09:00
Weather conditions; sunny/ overcast; sea state 3, wind W/NW
Three bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging in front of the cardinal buoy, one of which was a calf. The group then split with one adult heading south to forage and the mother and calf working their way north west from the cardinal buoy. The lone adult made its way close to the harbour wall and was later joined by the mother and calf at which point a female Atlantic grey seal was seen also by the harbour wall. For the last half of the survey the dolphins had made their way back to the cardinal buoy where they foraged at depth.

2hr survey; Start time 11:00
Weather conditions; sunny/ fair; sea state 3, wind SW
Seven bottlenose dolphins including one calf

The three dolphins in the previous survey remained foraging at depth at the cardinal buoy for the first hour of this survey and once again ventured close to the harbour wall, this time displaying leaping, tail slapping and lunging behaviour. Another two bottlenose dolphins came across the survey area from the east travelling and foraging and then one of the pair began leaping with the other three dolphins as one continued to forage in the harbour entrance. The group of four leaping dolphins made their way east back to the cardinal buoy and the lone forager travelled west close to Dolau beach and was then joined by two further dolphins who had swept in from the north east.
