30/06/2015: 32 bottlenose dolphins, 2 Atlantic grey seals.

30/06/2015: 32 bottlenose dolphins, 2 Atlantic grey seals.

2hr survey. Start time 7:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SSE.
Four bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period, two bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling, surfacing regularly and keeping a consistent heading, past the harbour wall. They were observed milling about at the surface and displaying tail slapping in front of the harbour wall. In the second half of the survey period, a bottlenose dolphin was first observed travelling past the harbour wall, surfacing regularly and keeping a consistent heading. A second individual later joined the first, with both taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth between the harbour wall and the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 9:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2, wind direction S/SE.
Fifteen bottlenose dolphins, one Atlantic grey seal.

At the beginning of the survey period four bottlenose dolphins were observed displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges off the headland, with another individual observed travelling with a consistent heading and regular surfacing past the harbour wall, and a sixth individual observed taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth near the cardinal marker. In the first half of the survey period the four bottlenose dolphins off the headland travelled with rapid progress and forward leaps eastwards, before splitting up throughout the survey area and displaying various behaviours: staying with slow circling and mingling at the surface, leaps/tail slaps/lunges, long dives and foraging at depth. An Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water in front of the harbour wall and another individual joined the previous six dolphins in the survey area towards the end of the first half of the survey period. At the beginning of the second half of the survey period four bottlenose dolphins were observed displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges past the headland, north of the harbour wall. Two bottlenose dolphins were also observed milling around and taking long dives at the cardinal marker and another two individuals were sighted in the harbour, south of the harbour wall, milling around at the surface. Towards the end of the survey period three bottlenose dolphins were observed taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth, before displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges off the headland, with two individuals also taking long dives at the cardinal marker.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction S.
Seven bottlenose dolphins.

At the beginning of the survey period two bottlenose dolphins were observed displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges off the headland, with a further two individuals taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth at the cardinal marker. Towards the end of the first half of the survey period another individual joined the two at the headland, before one individual split from the group and began to travel eastwards, taking long dives. In the second half of the survey period four bottlenose dolphins were sighted displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges off the headland, and three bottlenose dolphins seen around the cardinal marker milling around at the surface, with one individual also displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges. At the end of the survey period one bottlenose dolphin was sighted travelling eastwards with rapid progress and forward leaps between the headland and the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S.
Seven bottlenose dolphins, one Atlantic grey seal.

At the beginning of the survey period three bottlenose dolphins were observed taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth south of the cardinal marker. A further two individuals were sighted travelling west past the headland, before five individuals were sighted travelling west at the end of the survey period. An Atlantic grey seal was also seen in the water scanning the area at the end of the survey period.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S.
Two bottlenose dolphins.

In the first half of the survey period two bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling west towards the headland with long dives and surfacing at irregular intervals, thought to be searching for prey while on the move, north of the cardinal marker. At the end of the first half of the survey period the same two individuals were sighted off the headland, taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth, before disappearing for the rest of the survey period.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00.
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S.
Six bottlenose dolphins.

In the second half of the survey period two bottlenose dolphins were sighted off the headland, milling about at the surface, before travelling into the bay displaying leaps/tail slaps/lunges. Two bottlenose dolphins were observed milling about at the surface at the cardinal marker, with four individuals sighted travelling with regular surfacing westward towards the headland at the end of the survey period.
