30/05/15: 29 bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

Twelve bottlenose dolphins

Throughout this survey there were 5 individual sighting, the first being within the first few minutes of the survey actually beginning. A group of 2 bottlenose dolphins where spotting circling around. Ten minutes later there was another sighting of one individual as well as another two dolphins being spotted thought to be foraging at depth. Towards the end of the survey there was a group of three of bottlenose dolphins and another group of four dolphins were spotted leaping out of the water and showing off near the harbour wall.

Seventeen bottlenose dolphins

When the survey start the harbour was already full of dolphins with multiple groups being spotted through the area, the first group was spotted right in front of the boat as the survey left the harbour. As the survey reached target rock a group of 7 dolphins appeared surrounding the boat. They were very excitable with a lot of fast circling and leaping. They quickly moved back into the harbour though to forage or food perhaps as there dives became longer. At birds rock another group of nine bottlenose dolphins appeared with two juveniles. They’re behaviour indicated they may have been foraging at depth as they stayed around the same area with the occasional surfacing. Once the survey moved off down the coast there were no more sightings.

Two Atlantic grey seals.

The survey left the harbour and reached the first bird colony when the first sighting was record of a grey seal lying on the water about 100 metres from the boat. Another grey seal was spotted further down the coast in the water. Apart from the two seal sighting there were no other sightings for this boat trip.
