29/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction S

At the start of this survey one bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging in the middle of New Quay bay. This dolphin then moved to the cardinal marker and then began foraging there. This dolphin then left the survey area and no further sightings were made for the remainder of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction S-SW

Half an hour into this survey a bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging at the cardinal marker where it remained for 45mins before it then disappeared. Then half an hour after this another dolphin was seen foraging in the middle of New Quay bay.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 2, wind direction W-SW

At the start of this survey the dolphin seen at the end of the last survey was seen travelling west towards the fish factory, before leaving the survey area around the headland. 45 mins later a group of 3 dolphins, including 1 calf, were seen foraging in front of the harbour wall and they remained there for half an hour before moving out to the cardinal marker and foraging there. They then moved to the centre of New Quay bay and then started foraging there.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair/overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction S

The group of three dolphins from the last survey split with a mother and calf pair seen foraging by the harbour wall whilst the other dolphin foraged at the cardinal marker. They remained doing this for 45 mins. They then all moved into the centre of the bay where they foraged. The mother and calf pair then began leaping there whilst the other moved further offshore past the cardinal marker. This lone dolphin then moved back to the cardinal marker and foraged where it stayed for the remaining duration of this survey. The mother and calf pair that was leaping in the middle of the bay then started chasing fish near the harbour wall for the remainder of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 2, wind direction S

At the start of this survey the group of three dolphins reunited and started foraging at the fish factory for half an hour. Whilst this occurred another dolphin was seen lying motionless at the surface far offshore before this left the survey area. The group of three split up with the mother and calf pair seen foraging at the cardinal marker, where they stayed for the remainder of the survey, whilst the other foraged far offshore. This lone individual then left the survey area. In the last 15 mins of the survey a group of 2 adult dolphins were seen travelling east towards the cardinal marker whilst foraging.
