29/07/2017: Bottlenose Dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seal

 

2hr survey, start time 07:00

Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SW

 

The same two groups of Bottlenose Dolphins were seen throughout the survey. Two adults and one juvenile were present. The dolphins were seen foraging and head lunging. The dolphins were Jacky, Jay and Finn, who are regulars to the area. 2 gannets were associated with the dolphins.

 

2hr survey, start time 09:00

Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SW

 

The same group of dolphins were seen as the first survey. Behaviours included milling at the surface and slow circling.

 

2hr survey, start time 11:00

Weather conditions: overcast/sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction S

 

Jacky, Jay and Finn remained in the bay and were seen foraging at depth. They travelled back and forward, coming close to the harbour wall and then further offshore.

 

2hr survey, start time 13:00

Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 1, wind direction SW

 

Jacky and Jay split from Finn and foraged near the harbour wall, whilst Finn foraged near the cardinal marker. The group then left the bay at around 14:30pm.

Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW/NW

 

One lone Atlantic Grey Seal was seen travelling West past the harbour wall at 16:30pm.

Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW/NW/W

 

One group of two bottlenose dolphins was spotted at 18:00pm foraging as a loose group. They then left the bay shortly after.
