29/07/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Sunfish

2hour survey, start time: 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/sunny, sea state 2, wind S/SW
Seven bottlenose dolphins, one sunfish

A sunfish was travelling past the harbour wall at 9am and had been spotted by members of the public earlier on. The sunfish was seen approximately 200m offshore from the fish factory half an hour later and by 9.40am there were no further sightings. Dolphins were observed throughout the survey and were thought to be foraging for the majority of the time. A calf was seen remaining close to its mother’s side as the group of four were leaping and mingling in the second half of the survey.

2hour survey, start time: 11:00
Weather conditions: Sun and showers/Rain, sea state 2-4, wind W/SW
Four bottlenose dolphins

Despite the rain and rough sea, bottlenose dolphins were observed offshore from the fish factory during the first half of the survey. By the second half of the survey, the dolphins had travelled closer to the harbour wall and were displaying foraging behaviours.

2hour survey, start time: 13:00
Weather conditions: Sunny/rain, sea state 1-2, wind SW/W
Three bottlenose dolphins

The three dolphins sighted during this survey appeared to remain within the same area between the harbour wall and the fish factory throughout most of the two hours. The dolphins were performing long dives and were thought to be foraging. However, during the last half hour all three dolphins travelled North West out of the survey area.

2hour survey, start time: 15:00
