28/08/2014 – Bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. start time 0700
Weather conditions: Fair/sunny/overcast, Sea state 1-2, wind SE.
11 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey four bottlenose dolphins including two calves were seen travelling determinedly across the bay away from the fish factory. As this travelling group neared the cardinal buoy two further individuals were spotted foraging enthusiastically in the area. Five of these animals remained in the area foraging near the cardinal buoy for some time, with a sixth individual foraging in the bay off Traeth Gwyn, off the end of the little pier. This individual moved back across the bay and foraged amongst the bay moored boats for some time while the five individuals travelled back across the bay towards the fish factory. There was then a quiet period half way through the survey, but half an hour before the end of the survey five individuals were once again seen travelling away from the fish factory with a calf in the group. The group then split with two individuals milling at the surface just off the harbour wall, and three individuals (including the calf) foraging with leaps and jumps slightly further out.

2hr survey. start time 0900
Weather conditions: Changeable/sun and showers, Sea state 1, wind S.
Five bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey with five seen immediately foraging near the cardinal buoy, two of the group were a mother and calf who were foraging enthusiastically. Half an hour into the survey the group had split, with the mother and calf remaining near the cardinal buoy, foraging with jumps and leaps, and one further individual foraging near them. One of the group was now foraging just off the harbour wall, with another individual travelling across the bay off Traeth Dolau. Half way through the survey the individuals had moved around further, with one remaining foraging near the cardinal buoy, and three individuals all foraging normally around the harbour wall in various areas. The animals gradually left the bay one by one, until at the end of the survey only the individual foraging near the cardinal buoy remained.
