28/06/13: Bottlenose dolphins

Weather conditions: Overcast-Dull, sea state 1-3, wind W/SW.
9 Bottlenose dolphins.

At the start of the survey two single dolphins were observed staying in the area just off the fish factory, foraging while another single dolphin was seen between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy.
Two of the dolphins travelled in various directions but overall staying in the same area. In the last 15mintues of the first half of the survey two dolphins were seen in front of the harbour wall but started to travel making rapid progress displaying leaps and splashes North West. A single dolphin was also seen between the harbour wall and the fish factory travelling west, regularly surfacing.
In the second half of the survey five bottlenose dolphins, one which was a calf where seen just off the fish factory together travelling west. The group of dolphins then dispersed and the mother and calf were sighted in front of the harbour wall travelling in various directions. Three single dolphins were seen between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy all foraging at depth.
In the last 30minutes of the survey there were three dolphins sighted one at the end of the harbour wall, one between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy and another off the cardinal buoy all the dolphins were staying in those areas foraging at depth where they continued until the end of the survey period.

Five Bottlenose Dolphins

At the start of the survey two dolphins a mother and calf were in the area of the harbour foraging, a single dolphin was just off the end of the harbour wall also foraging at depth.
A single dolphin was also sighted between the harbour wall and the fish factory and another just off the fish factory also foraging at depth.
The dolphins were then seen in the next 15minutes but the mother and calf had left the area, there was a single dolphin still off the cardinal buoy and a single dolphin in front of the harbour wall foraging, while one dolphin was also between the harbour wall and the fish factory displaying leaping, lunges and tail slaps.
In the last 15 minutes of the first hour of the survey only two dolphins were seen one in front of the harbour wall which had remained there for the first hour and another in front of the cardinal buoy.
In the second half of the survey a single dolphin and a mother and calf were foraging around the cardinal buoy and a single dolphin just in front of the wall, the mother and calf then travelled to the area in front of the wall where they remained foraging for the duration of the second half of the survey. In the last 45mintues one of the single dolphins was not sighted again but one of the single dolphins remained at the cardinal buoy.

Ten Bottlenose Dolphins

At the start of the survey a mother and calf were seen just off the end of the harbour wall slow circling and milling at the surface and a single dolphin was just in front of the cardinal buoy displaying the same behaviour.
Four dolphins, one of which was a calf were then seen in the second 15 minute period west of the cardinal buoy where they continued to display slow circling and milling at the surface.
Three of the dolphins stayed in this area and started to display leaps, lunges and tail slaps.
A single dolphin entered the area between the end of the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy foraging at depth.
In the last 15minutes of the survey seven bottlenose dolphins where seen travelling east regularly surfacing followed by two dolphins also travelling in the same direction just behind the group. A single dolphin was seen just west of the cardinal buoy which also began to travel making rapid progress towards the other dolphins.
In the second half of the survey two dolphins were foraging at the end of the harbour wall and two dolphins foraging in front of the harbour wall. A small group of four dolphins were seen leaping and tail slapping in the distance of the harbour wall. A single dolphin was also foraging just next to the fish factory.
In the last half an hour of the survey a single dolphin was seen at the end of the harbour wall and eight dolphins where seen tail slapping and leaping while travelling East from the area between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy.
In the last 15minutes of the survey the group dispersed at the single dolphin at the end of the harbour wall was seen foraging as well as chasing prey, fish were seen visible. Another dolphin was seen between the wall and the cardinal buoy and another at the cardinal buoy both foraging.
Four dolphins were displaying leaps and tail slaps and a single dolphin leaping in the distance from in line with the factory and the buoy/

Seven Bottlenose Dolphins

A mother and calf were seen at the start of the survey milling at the surface just off the wall, a further four dolphins where seen travelling with regular surfacing just behind them.
The mother and calf stayed in the area and were joined in front of the harbour wall by a group of three dolphins travelling. Two dolphins were also in the same area leaping.
In the second half hour of the survey the three dolphins where fast circling, leaping, tail slapping and lunging just off the end of the wall and a single dolphin travelled east.
In the last 15 minutes of the first hour six dolphins continued to leaping, tail slap and lunge In the area in front of the harbour but towards the factory. One dolphin on its own travelled west towards the factory and another single dolphin foraged at depth between the factory and the cardinal buoy.
In the second half of the survey two dolphins and single dolphin stayed in front of the wall and a group of four dolphins travelled east.
In the second 15 minutes five dolphins one which was a calf were leaping and lunging and a single dolphin travelled west.
In the last half an hour of the survey one single dolphin travelled west while displaying long dives and continued out of sight, two dolphins foraging at depth between the end of the wall and the cardinal buoy.
In the last 15minutes only one single dolphin foraged alone near the cardinal buoy.
