28/03/2016: 8 bottlenose dolphins, 2 harbour porpoises and 4 Atlantic grey seals

Three bottlenose dolphins

In the first half of the survey period, a lone bottlenose dolphin was sighted near the headland, travelling in a north-easterly direction with irregular surfacing, thought to be foraging whilst on the move. It travelled across the bay towards the cardinal marker, where it was briefly observed taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth, before disappearing in the second half of the survey period. Towards the end of the survey period, a pair of bottlenose dolphins was sighted taking long dives near the headland, thought to be foraging at depth. They were observed travelling towards the harbour wall with regular surfacing.

Five bottlenose dolphins and two harbour porpoises

At the beginning of the survey period, the same pair of bottlenose dolphins seen at the end of the last survey period was observed taking long dives near the headland, thought to be foraging at depth, before disappearing. In the second half of the survey period, a lone bottlenose dolphin was sighted taking long dives near the headland, shortly followed by another sighting of a pair of bottlenose dolphins also taking long dives nearby. A pair of harbour porpoises was also seen, travelling in front of the harbour wall in a south-easterly direction towards the harbour. All the animals has disappeared by the end of the survey period.

One bottlenose dolphin and two Atlantic grey seals

At the beginning of the survey period, a lone Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water near the headland. In the second half of the survey period, a lone bottlenose dolphin was sighted, travelling west towards the headland with irregular surfacing, thought to be foraging whilst on the move. At the end of the survey period, a second Atlantic grey seal, a female, was seen travelling south away from the headland and towards the harbour wall.

One bottlenose dolphin and one Atlantic grey seal

A lone bottlenose dolphin was sighted once at the beginning of the survey period, travelling in an easterly direction north of the harbour wall. In the second half of the survey period a lone Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water in front of the harbour wall.

A lone Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water in front of the harbour wall half way through the survey period, and again near the headland shortly after, before disappearing.
