27/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2 hour survey, start time 11:00

12 bottlenose dolphins, including one calf and one Atlantic grey seal

Dolphins including one calf were seen throughout the survey. Two dolphins were initially seen travelling east at the harbour wall. They were then joined by other dolphins in loose groups with 12, including one calf being the most sighted 45 minutes into the survey, after which some dolphins began to leave the survey area. They were mostly seen foraging, travelling and sometimes leaping and lunging between the fish factory, harbour wall and cardinal buoy. An Atlantic grey seal was also seen in the first 15 minutes of the survey near the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: Fair/overcast/dull, sea state 4, wind SW
Five bottlenose dolphins, including one calf and two Atlantic grey seals

At the start of the survey, a mother and calf were seen travelling northwest from the harbour wall. Another two dolphins were also seen travelling in the same direction from the harbour and then all four dolphins then left the survey area. One Atlantic grey seal was also seen near the harbour wall at the start of the survey, and was joined by one more seal after 15 minutes. One Atlantic grey seal was then sighted 30 minutes later, and then there were no more sightings for the rest of the survey.
