27/08/2017: 7 bottlenose dolphins, 14 Atlantic grey seals and 6 harbour porpoise

The first sighting of this survey occurred just at the start of the trip, of an Atlantic grey seal in New Quay bay. Another grey seal was seen in the water near Bird’s Rock. The next sighting was of a male Atlantic grey seal in the water near Cwmtydu, followed by a sighting of a female grey seal bottling further along the coast. Towards Ynys Loctyn another male seal was spotted bottling in the water, before a single bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging in the area. On the way back towards New Quay, 6 harbour porpoise were seen travelling west!

3 bottlenose dolphins and 2 Atlantic grey seals

The first sighting of this survey was a male Atlantic grey seal swimming near New Quay headland. The next sighting was of two bottlenose dolphins, an adult and juvenile, deep diving and foraging near Ynys Loctyn. On the way back from Ynys Loctyn, a single bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging. The final sighting was of a female Atlantic grey seal in the water near Bird’s Rock.

5 bottlenose dolphins and 5 Atlantic grey seals

The first two sightings of this trip occurred in quick succession, with male seal being spotted in the water one side of Bird’s rock, and another female seal being spotted in the water the other side! Another seal was spotted swimming slightly offshore of Bird’s Rock. Two adults and a juvenile dolphin were then seen foraging, leaping and head slapping by Ynys Loctyn. When the boat turned around to come back to New Quay, two more bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging and leaping. One of these two dolphins then approached the boat, coming within about 20m! Two more seals were seen on the way back near Bird’s rock, one male in the water and one female diving.
