27/05/15: 18 Bottlenose dolphins

Eight bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were seen continual throughout the two hour two survey. They were mostly seen travelling or foraging either while travelling or staying within the same area. Between 9:30 and 10:15 boat encounters were sighted coming within 50 meters of the dolphins, their behaviour did not change during the encounter. In the second hour they were seen travelling with leaps and splashes, and then staying were they either were milling around at the surface or foraging at depth. Most sightings were seen between the cardinal buoy and the fish factory.

Four bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were only seen in the first 15 minutes of the survey, and they were split into pairs, with both pairs milling around at the surface. There were no boat encounters.

Three bottlenose dolphins including a calf

Bottlenose dolphins were observed during the last half an hour of the survey. The three bottlenose dolphins, one which was a calf, were milling around and travelling between the cardinal buoy and the fish factory. Four boats encountered the dolphins, one which was a speed boat that was travelling too fast and erratically. The dolphins changed their behaviour to tail slapping, between 14:30 – 14:45, but within the last fifteen minutes of the survey they didn’t change their behaviour during the boat encounters.

Three bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were only sighted within the first hour of the survey. Two bottlenose dolphins were first sighted for fifteen minutes, then they left the survey area for fifteen minutes after returning for half an hour. They were joined by another individual for the last fifteen minutes. When they were in the survey area they displayed behaviour of staying while foraging at depth.
