26/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey, start time 11:45
Weather conditions: sea state 1-2, visibility 1-10/>10, light swell
29 Bottlenose dolphins & 1 Atlantic grey seal

When embarking from the harbour wall the bay had 15 dolphins observed from the boat including 2 calves. These were in four separate groups, all foraging in different locations of New Quay Bay. The first group of 6 including 2 calves were very active, leaping out of the water and splashing to feed on a ball of fish that was underwater, there were also approximately 20 herring gulls joining in on the feed. When travelling across the bay to Birds Rock, another 9 dolphins were seen in 4 different locations on travels, all foraging and surfacing regularly, thought to be split into smaller groups to herd as one collective group. Offshore at Birds Rock another two groups both containing 6 dolphins were spotted with associating herring gulls and were seen approaching the boat and bow riding the slow waves coming from the boat. Offshore towards Cwmtydu beach a female Atlantic grey seal was sighted swimming and scanning, also on the route back closer inshore near Birds Rock another 2 female seals were seen bottling their heads out of the water in close proximity.

2hr survey, start time 13:45
Weather conditions: sea state 1-2, visibility 1-10/>10, light swell
7 Bottlenose dolphins & 3 Atlantic grey seals

At the start of this survey 3 bottlenose dolphins including one calf were spotted very close to the harbour wall. On route towards Llangranog, by Ynys Lochtyn a female seal was spotted scanning in the water. Inshore by Cwmtydu beach two female Atlantic grey seals were spotted again bottling heads out of the water (thought to be same as previous boat survey). When returning to the bay 4 bottlenose dolphins were spotted foraging around the cardinal marker, including two adults and two calves.
