26/10/2016: 9 bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

1.5 hour survey. Start time 10:49

Weather conditions: sea state 1-4, visibility >10, low-moderate swell, cloud cover 4-6 with and without glare 

1 Atlantic grey seal

1 adult grey seal was seen in the water at 11:31, around 20 metres from the boat, on the port side.

 

1.5 hour survey. Start time 12:23

Weather conditions: sea state 2-4, visibility >10km, low-moderate swell, cloud cover 2-3 with glare

2 bottlenose dolphins

2 adult bottlenose dolphins were spotted once at 12:42, around 5 metres from the boat, on the starboard side.

No marine mammal sightings

1 barrel jellyfish

7 bottlenose dolphins

A total of 7 dolphins were seen in 4 separate sightings. The first sighting was at 15:32, when 2 adult dolphins were seen around 90 metres from the boat on the port side, travelling west. At 15:43 another adult dolphin was spotted from the port side around 200 metres from the boat, thought to be foraging. At the same time, another 2 dolphins were sighted, one of which was a calf, also foraging. The dolphins were joined at 16:07 by another two adults around 50 metres from the boat on the starboard side, which displayed leaps and tail slapping behaviour, to form a group of 7 which stayed around the boat until the end of the survey.
