26/10/14 – bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2-3, wind SW
Seven bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the length of the survey. At the start of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging near the end of the pier whilst another four dolphins – including a mother and calf were seen foraging near the cardinal buoy. These dolphins remained in the area for the first hour and were observed leaping near the cardinal buoy before travelling NE towards the end of the hour.
At the start of the second hour, one dolphin was observed foraging near the pier with another individual seen leaping a short distance from the pier. A further three dolphins including a mother and calf were leaping near the cardinal buoy. This group stayed in the area for the remainder of the survey and were joined by another foraging individual nearer the end.

Two bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were only observed during the first half hour of the survey. At the start of the survey, two dolphins were seen foraging a short distance from the harbour wall. Shortly afterwards they were seen travelling away from the study site towards the fish factory.

10 bottlenose dolphins and 2 Atlantic grey seals

Nearing the end of the first hour, two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling and foraging near the end of the pier. These individual were soon joined by a group of four bottlenose dolphins who were leaping near the pier. A group of four bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging near the end of the pier during the last 15 minutes of the survey. A male and female Atlantic grey seal were seen in the water near the beach.

10 bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

At the start of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were seen for a short time leaping near the harbour wall. A group of five dolphins including a mother and calf were seen leaping and travelling towards the fish factory whilst another individual was traveling E from the fish factory. Nearing the end of the first hour, another two dolphins were seen traveling towards the fish factory. At the start of the second hour, one Atlantic grey seal was seen swimming along the front of the harbour wall.
