26/06/2016: 29 bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction NW
Nine bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen off the headland about half an hour into the survey. In the last 45 minutes of the survey, a group of six bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were observed leaping and socialising in the bay. The group were seen in the same area for about half an hour, before travelling west with regular surfacing out of the bay and past the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction SW
Six bottlenose dolphins

About half an hour into the survey, a group of six bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were observed leaping and socialising near the harbour wall for about half an hour. The group split for about fifteen minutes, and one individual was from then observed foraging with long dives near the end of the harbour wall, with another lone individual displaying the same behaviour further out and north of the harbour wall. The remaining group of four, including the calves, were seen to carry on leaping and socialising between the two separate individuals. The group reformed and travelled with regular surfacing north-west towards the headland and out of New Quay bay.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 2-3, wind direction W/SW
Six bottlenose dolphins

Roughly 45 minutes into the survey, five bottlenose dolphins were observed taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth north of the harbour wall. Two of the dolphins travelled into the harbour and foraged there throughout the rest of the survey. In the last half an hour of the survey, another bottlenose dolphin joined the other dolphins that had moved towards the headland. The four dolphins were observed leaping and socialising off the headland, moving slightly further to the east by the end of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: rain/mist, sea state 1-2, wind direction W/SW
Ten bottlenose dolphins

From the beginning of the survey, three of the bottlenose dolphins that had been seen at the end of the previous survey period were still present in the harbour and one foraging out by the cardinal marker. Throughout the rest of the survey, seven more bottlenose dolphins joined the three in the bay, displaying behaviours such as foraging with long dives, leaping, and socialising. By the end of the survey period, two bottlenose dolphins, one a calf, were still present in the survey area, foraging with long dives near the cardinal marker.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: rain/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SW
Three bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were sighted travelling west towards the headland at the beginning of the survey. The dolphins were observed travelling into and out of the bay and around the survey area throughout the survey period. Other behaviours observed were foraging with long dives and leaping and socialising near the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: rain/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction W
Six bottlenose dolphins

The three bottlenose dolphins that had been seen at the end of the previous survey period were still present north of the harbour wall, travelling in an easterly direction and foraging at depth. Two more bottlenose dolphins was also seen travelling in the same direction nearby. Half way through the survey period, two more bottlenose dolphins were seen in the survey area, and all six dolphins were observed foraging and taking long dives north of the harbour wall and off the headland. By the end of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were still present, foraging and taking long dives, near the cardinal marker. An Atlantic grey seal was also spotted at the very end of the survey, just off Dolau beach.
