25/10/2014 – bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00

Nine bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Bottlenose dolphins were observed throughout the entire survey. At the start, a group of four were seen leaping just off from the end of the pier. Two pairs of bottlenose dolphins – including a mother and calf were seen foraging off the beach. These pairs remained in the same area for roughly 30 minutes. In the second half of the survey, 3 individuals were seen foraging in the area surrounding the beach. A male Atlantic grey seal was also seen in the water. Nearing the end of the survey, a pair of dolphins was seen leaping near the cardinal buoy that was joined by another individual.

Weather conditions: fair & overcast, sea state1-2, wind SW
10 bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the length of the survey. At the start of the survey, one dolphin was seen foraging in front of the pier whilst four dolphins were seen foraging and chasing prey at the surface near the cardinal buoy. Nearing the end of the first hour, three dolphins were seen travelling E and two dolphins were seen travelling SE. Two dolphins were still seen foraging near the end of the pier. At the start of the second hour, 6 dolphins were seen travelling NE from the cardinal buoy whilst two remained to forage. Following this, another two dolphins were seen travelling NE from the fish factory.  Nearing the end of the survey, a large pod of 10 bottlenose dolphins were seen leaping and travelling W from the cardinal buoy.  A group of 6 remained to forage just in front of the pier.

Seven bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals

At the start of the survey, a total of four dolphins were seen foraging and leaping in front of the pier with a further three dolphins foraging out near the cardinal buoy. Following this, two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling towards the fish factory whilst four dolphins were foraging further off from the cardinal buoy. During the last hour of the survey, a total of two female Atlantic grey seals were seen in the water near the pier.

Weather conditions: overcast/fair/rain, sea state 2, wind W/SW
Eight bottlenose dolphins

Within the first 15 minutes of the survey, two dolphins were seen travelling NE from the pier whilst one individual was seen leaping just off the cardinal buoy. At the start of the second hour, three dolphins were seen foraging and leaping near the fish factory. The three individuals later moved off in a NE direction. Near the end of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling towards the fish factory.
