25/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Seven bottlenose dolphins, including one calf

Four bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling near the fishing factory at the start of the survey. One left the area after 30 minutes, and the other three were seen leaping and lunging before also leaving the survey area 15 minutes later. There were no sightings for the next hour. The dolphins then returned to the survey area in the last 15 minutes of the survey. Four dolphins were seen leaping and lunging near the fish factory, while three dolphins including one calf were seen travelling towards the cardinal buoy.

2 hour survey, start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Rain/fair/sunny, sea state 1, wind SW-S
Eleven bottlenose dolphins, including one calf and one Atlantic grey seal

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the first hour of the survey. A total of eleven, including one calf were seen mostly travelling between the cardinal buoy and fish factory, foraging and occasionally leaping and lunging in both tight and loose groups. The dolphins then left the survey area and there were no sightings for 30 minutes. Afterwards, an Atlantic grey seal was seen near the harbour wall. 15 minutes later six bottlenose dolphins, including one calf were seen travelling in a south easterly direction from the fish factory.

2 hour survey, start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull/rain/fair, sea state 2, wind SSE-SE

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted at the start of the survey, when three including one calf were seen leaping and lunging near the fish factory. The dolphins then left the survey area. An Atlantic grey seal was seen near the fish factory 30 minutes later, and then there were no sightings for the rest of the survey.
