25/08/2014: Bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. start time 0900
Weather conditions: overcast/rain. Sea state 1. Wind S/SSE.
Seven bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey, with two seen immediately milling at the surface near the cardinal buoy. these remained in the area for around half an hour, with a third dolphin also seen foraging nearby. Two further bottlenose dolphins also travelled east past the harbour wall, leaving five individuals in the bay, visible from the harbour wall. By half way through the survey one individual had moved out of the bay leaving three bottlenose dolphins foraging with leaps and jumps in the bay off Traeth Dolau, and a further individual foraging normally a little further out, past the fish factory. These dolphins continued to move around the bay, often coming in close to the harbour wall. by the end of the survey there were once again five bottlenose dolphins in the bay, three foraging near the cardinal buoy, two just to the east of the fish factory and a further individual milling in the bay approximately half way between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. start time 1100
Weather conditions: Rain. Sea state 2. Wind S.
Four Bottlenose dolphins

With bottlenose dolphins seen throughout the survey, three were seen immediately leaping between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy, where they remained foraging for approximately half the survey. A fourth individual was also seen travelling through the bay 15 minutes into the survey however it didn’t remain in the bay very long. An hour into the survey there were once again four bottlenose dolphins in the bay, two foraging fairly far out just west of the cardinal buoy, and two in the bay between Traeth Dolau and the fish factory. Gradually these individuals dissipated leaving only one dolphin in the bay, in the far distance past the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. start time 1300
Weather conditions: Overcast/fair. Sea state 2. Wind SE.
Five bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were once again visible in the bay for the entire survey. At the beginning of the survey a group of four bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging far out in the bay, past the cardinal buoy, with a fifth individual travelling with deep dives heading east away from the fish factory. Gradually the group on the horizon dissipated, and the individual moved about the bay foraging as it went. Just less than half way through the survey it was foraging near the cardinal buoy, and by the end of the survey it was on the horizon past the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. start time 1500
Weather conditions: fair/overcast. Sea state 3-2. Wind SSE.
Five bottlenose dolphins

Just shy of half way through the survey three bottlenose dolphins were seen near the fish factory. One of the group was foraging with the other two travelling east across the bay. At the half way point in the survey there were two individuals travelling between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy, and a further two foraging normally just off the fish factory. A mother and calf, later identified as “Jackie” and her calf were seen shortly afterwards, milling at the surface just off the end of the harbour wall. They then moved on out towards the cardinal buoy. where another mother and calf were seen foraging, along with a fifth individual.
