25/07/12: 21 bottlenose dolphins, eight harbour porpoise and 29 Atlantic grey seals

Ten bottlenose dolphins and six Atlantic grey seals

The first, individual bottlenose dolphin was sighted foraging just off the harbour wall in New Quay harbour.  Shortly after a further three bottlenose dolphins, including a juvenile, were sighted foraging near the fish factory.  Another dolphin was seen foraging just past New Quay headland, soon after which the first seal was sighted, in the water at Bird’s rock.  Further down the coast, on the way past Trwyn Crou, five Atlantic grey seals were seen in the water, one of which was male and a bottlenose dolphin, foraging. Once at Ynys Lochtyn, two dolphins were spotted foraging.  Finally, on the way back towards New Quay harbour, two dolphins were sighted near the bird colonies, foraging.

Four bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals

The first bottlenose dolphin of the trip was sighted off the fish factory foraging.  This was closely followed by the second bottlenose dolphin of the trip, foraging near the bird colonies.  A female Atlantic grey seal was next spotted just past Cwn Tudu in the water.  Finally, on the way back to New Quay, a seal was seen in the water at the bird colonies and two dolphins, a mother and calf, were seen milling and leaping near target rock.

Four bottlenose dolphins, six harbour porpoise and six Atlantic grey seals

The first sighting of the trip was of a single bottlenose dolphin foraging in front of the harbour wall in New Quay.  A mother and calf harbour porpoise were sighted on the offshore leg, just off Trwyn Crou foraging.  With a further group of four harbour porpoise being sighted foraging towards Ynys Lochtyn.  On the inshore leg, a dolphin was sighted foraging near Trwyn Crou closely followed by consecutive sightings of six female Atlantic grey seals all the way down the coast to Bird’s rock.  These sightings included three seals hauled out and three in the water.  The final sighting of the trip was back in New Quay harbour where we saw two bottlenose dolphins foraging near the cardinal buoy.

Three bottlenose dolphins, two harbour porpoise and 15 Atlantic grey seals

A bottlenose dolphin was seen right at the beginning of the trip, foraging south of the harbour wall.  The next sighting was at Bird’s rock, where three Atlantic grey seals were seen hauled out, one of which was male.  Two harbour porpoise were then seen foraging on the offshore leg past the caves.  12 seals were sighted between the caves and Cwm Tudu, including a group of ten seals fighting and playing in the water.  Finally, two dolphins were seen near the fish factory on the way back into the bay.
